Anchor Brewing is one of America’s oldest breweries, and officially opened for business in San Francisco in 1896. It had its beginnings in the California gold rush, when German brewer Gottlieb Brekle came to the state with his family. He bought an old saloon on Pacific Street for $3,500; 25 years later, this would become Anchor Brewing. Prohibition shut down Anchor in 1920, but the brewery came back in 1933 with owner Joe Kraus. By the end of the 1950s, the brewery struggled as America had acquired a taste for mass-produced lighter beers. In 1965, a Stanford grad named Fritz Maytag took ownership of the company, and began a brewing renaissance in San Francisco. In August of 1979, Anchor produced its first Steam Beer at its current location, and in 1993, Anchor Brewing became the first brewery in the world with its own in-house distillery. Much of Anchor’s appeal lies in its tradition and heritage, and even though its top beers are known worldwide, they are still made in Anchor’s copper brewhouse in San Francisco.
