Make-A-Wish Foundation’s Orange County & the Inland Empire chapter was established in 1983. Make-A-Wish OC & IE is a 501(c)(3) non-profit that reaches out to children between the ages of 2 1/2 and 18 that live in Orange County, San Bernadino & Riverside. This chapter first began by fulfilling a 14 year old girl named Tamra’s wish to see the crystal clear blue waters of the Caribbean. Ever since Tamra’s wish was granted, the Orange County and Inland Empire chapter has made over 5,000 other children, with life threatening medical conditions, wishes come true.

This amazing non-profit has granted more than 240,000 wishes for children in the United States and its territories. Also, “Make-A-Wish grants a wish, on average, every 38 minutes and, on average, a child is referred for a wish every 28 minutes.” Here are a couple breathtaking wishes that have been granted by the Orange County and Inland Empire chapter.

Katie18IwishtogotoNewYork

Katie, 18, was diagnosed with kidney cancer and wished to New York during the holiday season. Once she was well enough, she was able to travel to the city that never sleeps, during the time where it is filled with beautiful lights and holiday cheer. Katie was able to experience many different things in New York such as the going to see a show on Broadway and visiting the Statue of Liberty, but most importantly be able to kindle her passion for fashion with New York’s infamous shopping.

Jorge

Jorge, 5, was diagnosed with retinoblastoma, which a rare form of cancer of the eye. His wish was to join the ranks of the Marines. Make-A-Wish and everyone over at Camp Pendleton joined together to make Jorge’s wish come true. He was sworn in as the general for the day and everyone obeyed is every order. He also got the chance to ride in assault vehicles, take Marine Corps boxing lesson, and fly a helicopter simulator. Jorge’s excitement, happiness, and energy effected every single person involved in making his wish come true that day.

Both of these wishes, along with the thousands of others that have been fulfilled by the Orange County and Inland Empire Chapter, have not only helped to change the lives of those children that have life threatening medical conditions, but also their family’s lives and all of the lives that they have touched in between. A recent study that was done about the wishes that Make-A-Wish grant, show that: “98% of wish parents felt the wish experience gave them an opportunity to be a “normal”  family again, and 92% of parents saw their children experience re-empowerment to take back the ability to make decisions in their lives.”

Make sure to visit Make-A-Wish Orange County & the Inland Empire at ocie.wish.org for more information about how you can help to make more wished come true and learn about the Make-A-Wish events held throughout the year.
